Heat?
The bones are not just mineral substances. They have living cells, particularly in the marrow, where hematopoiesis occurs. Compact bone–the most dense bone—also has living cells (osteoblasts and osteoclasts among them).
All cells need a temperature of about 37 degrees in order to maintain metabolic (catabolic, biosynthetic) pathways for their homeostatic maintenance and their functions. This temperature–maintained by the generation of “heat”—is used to keep enzymatic reactions working properly.
I know of no other special need for heat by the bones in particular.
