What books or sites should I read to learn how to be a good breeder?

Filed in Category Reproductive System Books

I have a fantastic Chihuahua & my vet thinks I should consider breeding her. I have looked around but haven’t found enough information on the subject. I would love to see an example of the canine reproductive system & get more information on the birthing process.

You may want to look in your local phone book and call a local breeder and ask them how to get started. I’m sure they can point you in the right direction and most are willing to help out people.

I agree with the first answerer — you can read all the books you want, but a good breeder should be your first resource. They will be able to tell you about the tests that you need to give parent chihuahuas — a good-looking, well-behaved chihuahua is not necessarily a good candidate for breeding. He/she will need to meet the AKC’s health and physical standards. You’ll also need to have a goal of what you want the puppies for — do you want to enter dog shows (most reputable breeders only breed when they’re after a specific type of look to further their line, or to enter a show)?

Anyway, I’ve posted some helpful sites below. Good luck!
