Renaissance humanists believed that if you want to build a just society you must begin with the facts of human nature. This book argues that the idea of a universal human nature was as important to Shakespeare as it was to every other Renaissance writer. In doing so it questions the central principle of post-modern Shakespeare criticism. Postmodernists insist that the notion of defining a human essence was alien to Shakespeare and his contemporaries; as radical anti-essentialists, the Elizabethans were, in effect, postmodernists before their time. In challenging this claim Shakespeare’s Humanism shows that for Shakespeare, as for every other humanist writer in this period, the key to all wise action was ‘the knowledge of our selves and our human condition’.
By modifying his source materials in this way, Shakespeare was able to take an unremarkable revenge story and make it resonate with the most fundamental themes and problems of the Renaissance. The Renaissance is a vast cultural phenomenon that began in fifteenth-century Italy with the recovery of classical Greek and Latin texts that had been lost to the Middle Ages. The scholars who enthusiastically rediscovered these classical texts were motivated by an educational and political ideal called (in Latin) humanitas—the idea that all of the capabilities and virtues peculiar to human beings should be studied and developed to their furthest extent. Renaissance humanism, as this movement is now called, generated a new interest in human experience, and also an enormous optimism about the potential scope of human understanding. Hamlet’s famous speech in Act II, “What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and
Galileo was probably the first to clearly state that the laws of nature are mathematical, and not just the work of gods. He explained that in a way we are like pawns to the gods, although they do some things we ultimately control ourselves
“According to Stephen Hawking, Galileo probably bears more of the responsibility for the birth of modern science than anybody else, and Albert Einstein called him the father of modern science”

Italian Renaissance art reflected the principles of humanism. Humanism developed durng the Renaissane and placed less emphasis on God and more emphasis on the achievements of man. Humanists believed that all old doctrine, including previously widely-accepted doctrine from respected philosophers, should be brought under scrutiny and reevaluated to see if it is correct or has relevance to their society.
As said before, humanists were not as concerned about God as society was. Rather, they placed more value upon the achievements of the individual. This was reflected in their encouraging people to engage in the studia humanitas, or human studies, which were, more or less, liberal arts and all of the important disciplines, notably science, and to amass knowledge that would make the individual better.
This was reflected in Renaissance art because the Italian painters did not paint as many scenes of Biblical stories, nor did they paint pictures of the supernatural as much. They began to paint pictures of scientists, Greek philosophers, and other humans engaged in the studia humanitas. One notable example is Raphael Sanzio’s School of Athens, in which he depicts many of the famous Greek philosophers reasoning together in some sort of temple. Another is Leonardo Da Vinci, who studied science and drew parts of the skeletal system, the muscular system, and ideas for inventions.

Children’s Books Dealing With Systems Of Human Body, Human Needs, And The Numeric And Written Form Of Numbers?
I’m a student intern at a high school in an occupational course of study class. I’m teaching several thematic lessons on 5 of the human body systems: skeletal, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and digestive. I’m teaching these lessons for a Children’s Literature course, so every lesson has to incorporate children’s books. I have to have a math, science, and social studies lesson about one theme. I chose body systems for the theme because it related to what the students were learning that week. SO, I was wondering if anyone could help me out and provide some children’s book titles…
- For the math lesson, I need a children’s book that shows the numeral (ex:1) and word (ex:one) for various numbers. The book doesn’t necessarily have to deal with the human body. It just needs to show numerals and the words for several numbers. I’m trying to satisfy the standard: 1.01 Read and write word names for numbers to 1,000. I’m going to have the students “go on a scavenger hunt” using the internet and reference books to find how many ribs they have, how many bones are in their legs, how many chambers make up their heart, etc. I’m going to have the students record the numbers in word format (ex. 1 = one)
- For the social studies lesson, I’m trying to satisfy the standard: 1.01 Identify universal human needs and characteristics: physical needs, safety needs, psychological needs, self-actualization needs. I’m basically looking for a children’s book that deals with ANY of those needs. (I can easily tie that standard in with the human body).
- For the science lesson, I need a children’s book that discusses the 5 systems that I’m covering: skeletal, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and digestive.
I know that I can search Amazon for children’s books dealing with what I’m looking for, but I don’t want to miss out on any really good books that I might not find there.I really appreciate any kind of help!! Thanks!!
Help Me Remember A Sci Fi Book/series?
My memory is pretty hazy but as a kid I read a series of books by a Canadian author i think.
The series was about a man who becomes the last of his race after his planet is destroyed. The planet he originated from was like a Sparta of the future, the people were elite athletes and warriors. The man scours the galaxy looking for any survivors and the destroyer of his home world.
Along the way i think he gained a pink co pilot that had a one clawed foot and spoke telepathically.
He also has his skeletal system enhanced with a near indestructible metal (think Wolverine)
I’d love to be able to resolve this, its been driving me nuts.
